Media and Information Literacy: Day 3

Appropriate Online Behavior

The third day of our class for our second semester involved the discussion of Edmodo's acceptable use policy (since we were using it to pass our online assignments) and how we should behave online.

In exchange for using the services of Edmodo, we have to agree to its terms of service that incorporated the acceptable use policy. This allows everyone to enjoy and make use of Edmodo's services fully and without any worry. Since the internet is a big place, it still has rules and regulations that we have to strictly follow in order to stay safe from dangers-- and among these dangers is what we call Cyber bullying.

Cyber bullying is a form of inappropriate behavior in the online community where bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. People who do these things do this to shame and harass a certain person or a group of people online, where information spreads like wildfire. An example of cyber bullying is posting an embarrassing picture without consent of a person you dislike in class.

Our teacher listed six important points about the appropriate online behavior and how to stay safe in the internet community.
  • Think before you share.
  • Interact with tact.
  • Learn what you can do about Cyber bullying.
  • Protect yourself.
  • Protect your information.
  • Protect your computer.
In summary, I was reminded of the dangers of using media. It may bring us a lot of benefit, but the responsibility for its usage comes with it.
