Media and Information Literacy: Day 10

For our tenth day in MediaLit1718, we had our student teacher, Mr. Kim Tuico, to teach us about Media & Information Sources.

To start out discussion, we defined and explained the following keywords:
  • Reliability of Information
-Information is said to be reliable if it can be verified and evaluated. Others refer to the trustworthiness of the source in evaluating the reliability of information.
-In determining if the source is reliable, one must:
  1. Check the Author
  2. Check the Date
  3. Check for Citations
  4. Check the Domain
  5. Check the Design/Style
  • Accuracy of Information
-Accuracy refers to the closeness of the report to the actual data. The measurement of accuracy varies, depending on the type of information being evaluated.
-In determining the accuracy of the source, one must:
  1. Look for facts.
  2. Determine the reason for writing and publishing the information.
  3. Cross-reference with other sources to check for consistency.
  4. Check for advertising.
  • Value of Information
-Information is said to be of value if it aids the user in making or improving decisions.
  • Authority of the Source
-Sources with an established expertise on the subject matter are considered as having sound authority on the subject.
  • Timeliness
-Reliability, accuracy and value of information may vary based on the time it was produced or acquired.
Next, we moved on to discussing the different Types of Libraries. Mr. Tuico said that libraries were separated into two major categories: Physical and Digital. Physical libraries are the ones were we can personally borrow books for information meanwhile digital libraries make us of our latest technology in order to store information.

There are four different types of libraries:
  1. Academic Library
    -serves colleges and universities.
  2. Public Library
-serves cities and towns of all types.
  3. School Library
-serves students from kindergarten up to grade 12.
  4. Special Library
-are in specialized environments, such as hospitals, corporations, museums, the military, private business, and the government.
After the discussion, our student-teacher asked us to read three articles about the UAAP Cheerdance Championship. He asked us to fill up the following table with our selected article:

To finish our discussion, Mr. Tuico left us with an assignment where we had to identify information about our local community. My assignment can be found down below:

  1. Identify the different information about Manila Science High School
It is the first science high school in the Philippines located on Taft Avenue at the corner of Padre Faura Street in Ermita, Manila. The school was established was October 1, 1963 with its founder, Augusto Alzona. Its motto is "Science, Truth and Country." and its slogan is "Sustaining the Tradition of Excellence." The present principal of Manila Science High School is Maria Eva S. Nacion.
  2. What are the possible sources of this information?
The possible sources of this information can be Wikipedia, Facebook or MSHS' own Website. Wikipedia has covered the school's history and other general information like what type of school it is, where it is located, who is its founder and the like. The school also has its own Facebook page and website where it uploads and posts current events and contests in MSHS. People can also know when the entrance exams are being held in order for their children to get into the school.
To summarize, we learned about the different media and information sources, how to determine if its reliable and accurate and the different types of library. This lesson also helped us outline articles to determine if its information can be trusted.
